More info here:
In general, I (tjd) am the one who buys and stores most of the food items we take on trips, acting as the provisioner for everyone except Barf, who supplies his own. This was due to the fact that we were an even slower response team in the early days, going to the store on Saturday (afternoon sometimes!) to get our stuff. Now I just get a bunch of food that's ready to go in a half-hour's notice.

This list is only for two people, one-night outings. Longer trips or more people (or bigger/smaller eaters) must be adjusted for accordingly! Also, I've put in some of our favorite brands in here. If you don't like 'em, or have your own favorites, by all means, use 'em. We don't get money from these companies! Again, this is just a very general guideline, and will be fleshed out more in the future.

Breakfast
  • Sylvia's pancake mix (1 bag)
  • Northern Comfort (or other) maple syrup (4 oz.?)
  • Folger's coffee singles (6 packets each - we love coffee!)
  • cocoa (4-5 packets each - love to mix in coffee, big a.m. booster, esp with bourbon)
  • water

  • other possibilities:
  • oatmeal (1-2 packets)
  • granola bars (see snacks)
Lunch
actually, we don't really 'do' lunch. See the snack items.
We heavily encourage trail snacks: you eat a little bit at a time over a long period and can do it while moving or resting.
  • water
Dinner
  • Sahara Teapot Soups (1 ea.)
  • insta-dinners from:
    Backpacker's Pantry,
    Mountain House,
Natural High and others (1 usually feeds 2, read package)
  • whisky/bourbon (a must in the morning and evening) (16+ oz.)
  • olive or other oil (2-3 oz at most)
  • water

  • other possibilities:
  • tea (2 packets ea.)
Snacks
  • gorp (~4 oz ea.)
  • Gu (~3 ea.)
  • granola bars (4 ea.)
  • jerky (1 bag)
  • gatorade mix (optional, however much you want)
  • Jolly Ranchers (handful ea.)
  • water
Note: Now that we usually leave on a Friday night, I usually pack a few extra breakfast items along for Saturday morning before we hit the trail. Those amounts are not included in the lists above.
